I began teaching at NEBA in the fall of 1983. Pastor Thomas Ward gave me this opportunity right out of Bible college. My first year teaching, I met my future husband, Kevin Hicks. After we were married in 1985, I continued teaching until our first born son, Matt, was born in 1987. I stayed home for 12 years but in the meantime, Kevin was going to our Theological Institute and he then began teaching. When all of our boys were of school age, I came back to my original position in 1998. I have been on staff since then. I left the classroom to work as a support staff to Mr. Hicks and the teachers for a short time but again took on a teaching position. I believe God called me to teach and by His grace, I will always be involved in some capacity here at NEBA.
I love the opportunity to prepare the next generation not only academically, but also spiritually. We have had some lively Bible classes that take the Word of God literally and then draw application for these children and their age group. We memorize Scripture and learn how to find books, chapters, and verses so that they will be equipped as they grow older.
I find the ABEKA curriculum very comprehensive and easy to follow. There is definitely a building, step by step, from one grade to another. I often ask the students:
" What do you think Mrs. _____thinks?"
"We already know this."
"Yes, because we have already learned this and will build on it."
I also enjoy searching out additional activities and resources but there is more than enough to keep my students busy and move forward with confidence.
I have taught most of my years in grades 1 - 3 though one year, 5th grade gave me a real appreciation for what these young people are challenged to know. I particularly enjoy the lower ages groups' playfulness and creativity. They still can laugh and are usually quick to forgive and give grace in return. Maybe they are the reason why I love to color in adult coloring books and to watch my plants grow into strong, beautiful and mature plants.
God has been so good to me. I have had a blessed life. All my dreams have come true. I have been saved for 50 years this year and married to my best friend for 38 of those years! Praise the Lord!
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple. Psalm 27:4 KJV
